Sadly, in her last years, she was broke and lived alone in a hotel in London. She had long sold all of her metals and had no money. She no longer could afford her room or bar tab, so, the now King Charles paid her bills out of his pocket until her death. There is a small plaque at the bar where she always sat commemorating her. There is also a small white mouse painted just above the crown mounding near the ceiling in the lobby (pretty sure the lobby) of the hotel to recognize her as well.

She was an extraordinary woman. Reading the book she wrote herself gives far more detail. And as difficult as it may be to believe, she did far more than what’s known, it in her own book. And I love how she’s so modest about everything she did. She was always matter of fact. No ego. That was her personality. The SOE deliberately didn’t take recruits who were ego driven and in it for glory. They banned them from recruiting. Knowing they were very dangerous personalities for spy work. And guerrilla warfare.

An important detail not stated in the beginning of the documentary is what exactly Sophia's relations to royalty and nobility are: Catherine's mother was the sister of the King of Sweden, and their lineage stems from the House of Holstein-Gottorp, the very same as that of Peter III - who was her 2nd cousin. She is a Princess not only of a German State from which her Father ruled, Anhalt-Zerbst, but also from her Holstein-Gottorp lineage, called the Princes and Princesses of Eutin. Her Father's grandmother was also a Holstein-Gottorp and had maternal family connections to the Electorate of Saxony. She was NOT the complete nobody among nobility or royalty that she often portrayed herself as, and as she is portrayed in works based largely on her memoirs.

Duke Wayne fan here. I noticed this film on JW's IMDB list, but for some reason had never seen it on TV. Thought it was just a trifle in his filmography. Boy, was I wrong. What a terrific picture!!! Dedicated to the commercial pilots who were attached but not inducted into the U.S. Army-Air Force in WWII, it is a realistic, crackling dual story of a crew that has to emergency land in the Canadian North and their fellow pilots who must devise a way to find their comrades. The attention to detail is surprising, both in Wayne's efforts to keep his crew alive in the wild and the technical methods that headquarters employs for rescue. There is little melodrama here (aka, women) aside from a few quick flashbacks. However, the loyalty these aviators have for eachother is palpable. Though Duke is clearly the star, this is an ensemble cast all the way, with strong performances from James Arness, Lloyd Nolan, and Andy Devine. The steady hand of William Wellman is felt throughout. This thing has aged like it was made yesterday.

Another excellent John Wayne movie that is very different from some of his other films is Reap the Wild Wind 💨 . Basically, his films are excellent. I have yet to watch a John Wayne movie that I did not like. With him, it is about simply preferring one of his movies over the other.
